Construction begins

The lower deck will be replaced with a concrete structure faced in local granite. No plans, no permits, no building codes---yikes!

Happily, the work is being done by the contractor who built the house in the late 1970's so she knows the house and the rock underneath. Once the lower deck is finished we plan to rebuild the upper deck in wood and extend it around the house with a roof to create more shade. The roof over the upper deck will also mean we won't need to run around closing windows during the brief tropical showers that can hit at any time.

We also will be installing an additional layer on the roof, with insulation, to prevent the late afternoon heat build-up inside the house. We can live without AC now, but a better roof would make that more comfortable, even into June.

More Cow Wreck

I'm listening to Caroline tell what it was like in the BVI when they built their house 25 years ago. Not that much has changed on Anegada, but back on Virgin Gorda it's a different story.

Anegada

I'm trying to keep up with our hosts, Russ and Caroline Pringle, who invited us on their boat for a day on Anegada. Five miles of beaches like this with a reef offshore creating surf.

Anegada is unusual in the BVI since it is a low island built on a reef like the Bahamas rather than the volcanic mountains found in the rest of the chain.

At Cow Wreck Bay

Following a 5 mile walk on the beaches of Anegada, Susan relaxes at the bar while we wait for lunch.

Bliss

At the end of our February trip we went to the spa at Little Dix Bay. This is the view from the pool looking west to the small uninhabited islands known as "the Dogs."

We both had a massage and then ordered lunch here at this pool. We plan to do this again assuming we can manage the guilt.

The road to the North Sound

Looking down from the road into the North Sound from about 800 feet. There is really only one road that runs the length of the island, starting at the south end where Spanish Town and the airport can be found, and ending at Leverick Bay on the North Sound.

This picture was taken in February from the rest stop looking Northeast. This is a required stop on the way from the airport after picking up guests and we stop also when the weather is clear like it was that day. We never get tired of the first glimpse of the view each time we return from town.

Leverick Bay Resort

Here's the beach and mooring field at our neighborhood resort. This picture was taken on a morning walk about three minutes from our house. Excellent beach bar and the food at the restaurant is very good.
